Capitol Hill Club

The club has over 350 members (as of October 2008), but we are looking for more people to join us. There is no charge to become a member and our monthly meetings are fun and informative. We had over 100 club members come with us to Richmond in January 2008 to meet our representatives and let the folks on Capitol Hill know our expectations. If you are interesting in getting involved, please call us at (757) 217-0330.

Remember, your voice can make a difference! So Get Up, Get Out, and Get Involved!

Here are the leaders who make these clubs fun, informative, enjoyable, and exciting.

Vision Statement

Capitol Hill Club Members in RichmondThe Capitol Hill Club is an action-oriented and results-focused team from the Hampton Roads community who desire to let their voices be heard with other citizens in regard to legislative issues that directly affect the health and well being of the seniors of Hampton Roads.

The club is dedicated to ongoing education, training, and legislative action through the building of relationships in fun and informative meetings and events

History

In January 2004, Bon Secours Hampton Roads Health System, Inc. partnered with members of the Senior Health program and asked for their help in supporting parts of the Bon Secours advocacy agenda.

Advocacy is defined as “speaking or acting on behalf of a cause, a policy, a group of people or an individual, specifically to promote human dignity and to protect human rights with a preferential concern for the poor, disadvantaged and dying” To bolster our advocacy efforts, Bon Secours created the Capitol Hill Club.

The Capitol Hill was established from a small group of senior citizens who met with elected officials about policies and legislation, hoping to form a more structured organization that could have a greater impact on our legislators. There are three branches of the club, one on the Southside (Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center), one on the Peninsula (Mary Immaculate Hospital), and one in Western Hampton Roads (Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center). And with over 350 members strong, the club's goal is to provide an enjoyable, educational and exciting experience that elevates their understanding of public policy.

Club Objectives:

  • Raise awareness about key health issues being considered by lawmakers
  • Educate and mobilize seniors on matters of mutual concern
  • Explore the possibility of forming affiliate relationships with other organizations that share similar philosophies
  • Create excitement about the advocacy efforts that will increase the size of the group
