Freedom Fest Sparks Patriotism
The patriotic spirit was flying high at Freedom Fest’s Fourth of July celebration. About 400 people gathered Saturday, July 2, 2011, at the East Ocean View (EOV) Community Center to celebrate our country’s freedom with friends and neighbors.
Fun for the entire family
There were plenty of fun-filled activities for the entire family. Daring individuals sat high upon the seat in the dunking booth, dreading that perfect pitch that would land them in the water. The moon bounce was very popular with the children as they tumbled, bounced, and leapt in the air, defying gravity. Others tested their arm at the speed pitching game. Fishing fans brought rods and reels and competed in a fishing tournament. Bon Secours Healthy Communities provided a fun-filled area of healthy activity where young and old tossed bean bags at the cornhole game as they tried to win an EOV t-shirt. Others enjoyed a bag of popcorn or home brewed vanilla cinnamon apple tea. The Bon Secours Care-A-Van was also on hand providing free blood pressure checks.

Festive food
The irresistible smell of popcorn wafted through the air, drawing hungry folks in. Soft pastel clouds of cotton candy were also a big hit with adults and children alike. Icy sno-cones in assorted flavors were a welcome treat, providing some respite from the heat of the day.
A community-wide celebration
New Life Christian Center hosted this community-wide celebration in conjunction with Bon Secours Health System, the City of Norfolk, the Sheriff’s Department, the Sandfiddler Restaurant, the EOV Civic League, and others.
A great day of celebration
Ocean View has a long legacy of knowing how to celebrate the Fourth of July, and 2011 was no exception. It was a great day of fun, camaraderie and celebration. The event rekindled the patriotic spirit across the community, reminding everyone of the sacrifices that have been made for our freedom and how fortunate we are to live in “one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty, and justice for all” —America.
