Its amazing what the aging body can accomplish! Seniors are winning Olympic gold, starting businesses, helping the needy, and seeing lifelong dreams come to fruition in unsurpassed numbers.
What has happened that is allowing us to live longer and better? Is it medical advances? Technology? Exercise? I dare say it is a combination of all these things and more. Still, many of us are feeling our age unduly. For many seniors, getting out of bed without pain is our goal and not an Olympic medal. Some seniors have no desire to walk 1,000 miles, but what about a brisk morning walk around the block? For most, jumping a skateboard at the age of 65 is just not practical, but wouldnt you like to dance the night away at the upcoming senior prom?
Whether you want to walk around the block, or fly in space like John Glenn, your age should not be the determining factor. The real question should be how do you build or maintain your health to the needed level. Social interaction, living arrangements, a vision for the future, understanding your health, and staying fit are all-important aspects to consider.
Let me encourage you to get radical with aging. Learn how medicine, technology, exercise and other factors can help you maximize your health and independence. Discover the organizations and associations right here in Hampton Roads that have programs and services that you can enjoy while building your health. Come to the all-new Successful Aging Conference at First Baptist Church of Norfolk on Thursday, March 1, 2001.
