Many of the Causes...

Unfortunately, with all the possible causes of joint pain, it’s hard to know how to best treat the condition. Treatment can range from medication or exercise to outpatient arthroscopic surgery or joint replacement. Bon Secours, in conjunction with Atlantic Orthopedic Specialist, have opened the Joint and Hip Center. Now Hampton Roads has a state-of-the-art Hip and Joint Program for information, education and treatment of joint pain.

For more information about this new center or to reserve your seat at our seminar, “The Good News about Hip and Knee Pain” call the Bon Secours Health Line at

Aches and pains, are they just a part of life? As we grow older we begin to discover how our years of good living have affected our bodies, particularly our hips and knees. But hip and knee pain, especially when it is accompanied with stiffness and swelling, should be treated like a wake-up call. It’s the body’s way of telling us that something is wrong.
When pain persists, we can let it control our activities until our going slower and slower turns into immobility. Almost everyone over forty has some form of arthritis and this slowing down seems to happen right when we should be enjoying the rewards of a life of hard work.

Many of the causes of joint pain are easily treatable, while others may require a little more medical intervention. Tendinitis, synovitis, or bursitis can send even the most stoic reaching for pain relievers. Torn cartilage, one injury that’s not just reserved for football players, can be the cause of significant pain, swelling and immobility. Knee cartilage can easily tear by tripping on a curb, stumbling down a step, or twisting your knee the wrong way.
