Uncharted Territory
LandroverToday, people are learning how to take better care of themselves, and advances in modern medicine have helped us to overcome difficulties and diseases that were once debilitating. As a result, this generation is living longer than any generation before it.

Now that’s exciting news! Still, we have to remember that we are going where few have gone before. In fact, the overwhelming majority of information on health and wellness is focused on those who are 20-50 years old. Keep in mind that just 25 years ago 65 was considered ‘old.’

Today, however, more and more people are surpassing 75, 85, and even 95 years old and remaining vibrant, active participants in society. You are part of this “Living Longer Generation.”

Wow! That really sounds great, except for the fact that so much of maintaining health and wellness for seniors represents uncharted territory. Especially for those over 65 years old. So now that you have reached the golden years, and now that your ‘gold’ is increasing in value, where can you find the resources that you need to continue to build your health? Where can you find assistance in charting your way through this uncharted territory?

Presumably we all know of the adventures of Lewis and Clark, perhaps the greatest of American explorers. Before leaving on their expedition they evaluated their needs to the best of their ability and took with them the equipment and supplies they required. And, of course, they became adept at innovative solutions to unexpected situations. Our journey is much the same.

Let’s evaluate what we’re up against. What practical things do we need as we begin this adventure of graceful aging? Where will we obtain them?

First, we will need to be in good shape. That is to say, we need to maximize our physical capabilities. Granted, as we age we may loose some of our mobility and strength. Still, we must maintain our physical health to the highest degree possible, considering our personal limitations.

Next, we will need partners - even Lewis had Clark after all. It certainly becomes more difficult to maintain social interaction as we age. Our circles of friends seem to close in around us, tempting us to become isolated and alone. For this adventure, however, friends and partners will be critical to our success.

What about medical help? Certainly essential, but where do we find those few individuals who have real experience in caring for us? You and I both know that we now have a wider variety of needs than when we were younger. And those needs are different, even if the symptoms are the same.

As with any other adventure, preparation is the key success. So let’s get prepared!

In this issue of SeniorHealth we highlight some essentials. Staying fit with Body Recall, an exciting program that has had outstanding results from both a wellness and recovery perspective. You’ve got to hear the testimonies of those individuals who chose to prepare for their journey with this outstanding new program.

So you’re on the adventure, but you’re traveling alone! Dangerous stuff, and you know it. Consider the SeniorHealth Membership program. You will have ample opportunity to meet new people and resist the temptation to become sedentary and alone.

As for medical help, would you be interested if your own physician could provide you with the best medical care, provided by individuals who are trained and experienced in caring for older adults? Well it is available through your own physician at the Senior Assessment program, right here in Hampton Roads. You can read about it on page five.

Welcome to the adventure. I trust you are making all the necessary preparations.
