USPS Commemorates Hospice Care

Hospice Care StampA new 33 cent Hospice Care commemorative stamp was recently released by the U.S. Postal Service. According to Karen Davie, President of the National Hospice Organization, “this beautiful new hospice stamp gives us the opportunity to share the message that dying well, surrounded by friends and loved ones, is an option available to all Americans.” The artwork symbolizes life’s final journey; a butterfly depicts spiritual release, the last transition of life.

Managing end-of-life care has become an important concern for families. A nationwide Gallup poll conducted in 1996 showed that when seniors were asked to name their greatest fear associated with death, “being a burden to family and friends” ranked highest, followed by “fear of pain.” Hospice Care addresses both of these fears as well many others.

Hospice Care is available on the Southside and the Peninsula through Bon Secours Hospice, with locations at Maryview and Mary Immaculate. Bon Secours Hospice provides supportive care to both terminally ill patients and their families. Using the new hospice stamp is a great way to create awareness of this valuable program.
