Mammography Screening

Older Lady

Myth: As women age their chance of breast cancer declines.

Older women underestimate their risk of getting breast cancer. Typically, women incorrectly think that the longer they live without breast cancer the less they are at risk. The truth is; breast cancer incidence increases with age. Women are strongly encouraged to perform monthly self-breast exams, one of the easiest methods for early detection. A mammography screening checks for breast cancer when no sign, such as a lump, is present.

The American Cancer Society recommends annual mammography starting at age 40. Healthy women should continue to have annual mammogram screenings even into their 70’s. Most women make a mistake by no longer having their annual mammogram after age 50.

Talk to your physician about scheduling a mammogram. Women can request a mammogram without a physician order but must have a physician to whom the results can be forwarded. Bon Secours provides several convenient sites where a high-quality mammogram can be obtained. Phone 398-CARE (2273) for the site nearest you.
