Adaptive Driver Training
The Driving Clinic is a sate
llite site for the Riverside Rehabilitation Institutes Adaptive Driver Training Program (ADTP) and consists of two parts. The classroom evaluation and the in-car training, each lasting approximately one hour.
Classroom Evaluation
Response time, visual acuity, driving knowledge, and driving history are all reviewed in this segment of the program.
In-Car Training
The Driving Clinic provides a car and any necessary adaptive equipment for training.
- Training is individualized and emphasizes proficient maneuvering, basic driving skills and safety.
- The instructor provides training based on the drivers level of knowledge. Training can range from basic driving functions to highly complicated traffic situations.
- After the training, the car is available for the road test conducted by the DMV although the occupational therapist cannot ride along for the test.
Who is Served by The Driving Clinic?
Anyone who feels their driving could be improved. Testing becomes more imparative when any of the following has impaired your driving ability.
- Natural Aging Process
- Arthritis
- General Debilitation
- CVA/Stroke
- Visual Impediments
- Amputation
Follow Up
After the evaluation and subsequent training sessions, recommendations will be made for driving safety and/or adaptive equipment.

Accreditation
The Driving Clinic is a satellite site of Riverside Rehabilitation Institute's outpatient program and is accredited by:
- The Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).
- The Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.

Credentials
Licensed by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles as a State Certified Commercial Driving School. The Occupational Therapist conducting the program is dually licensed as a Commercial Driving Instructor and is recognized by the Association of Driving Educators for the Disabled (ADED) as a Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist.
