The Truth About Incontinence
- Incontinence is not a normal part of aging.
- Your don't have to suffer from incontinence.
- There are effective alternatives to surgery.
Most people who are suffering silently from incontinence don't need to. Simply asking for help is the first step towards full continence.
How Physical Therapy Can Help
Physical Therapy can be extremely effective in the treatment of urinary incontinence. On average, 85% of our patients regain full continence.Physical therapists evaluate the function and coordination of muscles in the lower trunk and pelvis, and will develop specific treatment programs based on your urological history and type of incontinence. Physical therapists using biofeedback for treatment offer a pain-free alternative to surgical procedures.
Biofeedback
The muscles of the pelvis and pelvic floor help control urine flow. However, these muscles can't be seen because they are deep inside the pelvis. By using bio-feedback, the activity of these muscles can be evaluated, assisting the therapist in designing the most effective treatment program for you.
Is the Treatment Painful?
Using a biofeedback device is pain-free and has no side effects. If direct stimulation of the muscles is included in your care plan, this treatment may be uncomfortable for some people but is not painful.
How Long is the Treatment?
Every person has different needs, but typically patients are seen two times a week for three weeks.
Typical Symptoms
- Loss of urine when getting up from a chair, coughing, sneezing, lifting or walking.
- Overwhelming urge to void. Listening to water, or being out in the cold results in loss of urine.
- Gradual onset of leakage that is getting worse over time.
- Incontinence starting after surgery.
- Frequent urination.
- Decreased social interaction/activities.
- Limited fluid intake.
Cost of Treatment
Patients receive an average of 6 therapy visits. The out-of-pocket expenses for treatment (based on Medicare reimbursement fee schedule) is approximately $20 for the initial session, and approximately $10 for each additional session. If the patient has supplemental insurance, no out-of-pocket expense is incurred.
