Advocacy is defined as “speaking or acting on behalf of a cause, a policy, or others.”
That is exactly what 144 seniors from the ‘Bon Secours Capitol Hill Club’ did as they traveled together to meet with their state and local legislators to lobby for health care changes for our senior citizens. It was a pleasant day in the capitol as our entourage visited lawmakers adorned with their eye-catching blue scarves.
Our group met with newly elected Senator John Miller; Delegates Lionel Spruill, Ken Melvin, and Kenneth Alexander; Gail Jaspen, Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Resources; Linda Nablo, Commissioner of the Virginia Department for the Aging; and Matthew Leighty, Assistant Director of the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association, to name a few. The trip proved to be both motivating and informative, and helped to give meaning to our motto “let your voice be heard.” Most importantly, our representatives clearly understood the healthcare concerns of our seniors. As we returned safely home, the buzz on the bus was “we can’t wait to bring the Bon Secours legislative priorities to ‘The Hill’ again next year.”
If you have a desire to have an enjoyable and educational experience that will increase your understanding of public policy as well as Bon Secours legislative priorities, come be a part of this dynamic group.
