Raising Awareness by “Raising Cane”
For the second year, the “Raising Cane” art show will be held to focus attention on the problems faced by older adults. The show will display imaginatively painted and decorated wooden walking canes. Artists and non-artists alike are invited to use their creative talents (including paint, jewels, feathers and the like) to transform a plain walking cane into a whimsical piece of art.
The “Raising Cane” art show, which will be on public display at the Art Space in Pembroke Mall in Virginia Beach, will benefit guardianship clients of Catholic Charities of Eastern Virginia. Many of them are elderly and frail and are court appointed to Catholic Charities’ long term care because they have no responsible relatives to help them.
“This promises to be a fantastic event that will help Catholic Charities, one of Hampton Roads’ most cherished organizations, further expand its services for those who need assistance,” said Steve Zollos, Administrative Director of Healthy Communities with Bon Secours. “I hope everyone will participate either by decorating a cane or coming out to see the show on September 23, 24 and 25, 2011.”
There is a $25 entry fee to decorate a cane. Regardless of your artistic talent or age, all are invited to get a little paint on their hands and participate in this worthwhile cause. Prizes for the best canes will be awarded at the opening night reception on September 23.
At the time of this printing, sponsors for the benefit art show included Bon Secours Health System, Tidewater Home Helpers, Direct Link, Vandeventer Black LLP, Pembroke Enterprises, Teagle & Little Printing, and Jerry’s Artarama. Sponsorship opportunities are still available.
If you are interested in being a sponsor or just want information about the event, please call (757) 456-2366 ext. 504 or visit Catholic Charities’ web site www.cceva.org.
