Shovel Ready

Bon Secours Planting Team

While the ‘shovel ready’ projects promised through the stimulus program have yet to materialize DePaul Medical Center, Mary Immaculate Hospital, and Maryview Medical Center have teamed up with the East Ocean View Civic League, the New Life Christian Center, Maersk Line, the Senior Living Guide, Habitat for Humanity, the Boy Scouts, and a host of volunteers to beautify East Ocean View.

With shovels in hand, volunteers took to the streets of the Pleasant Avenue area of East Ocean View to make it a ‘greener’ community. “We planted over 1,000 bushes over the course of a single week,” said Joanne Merinar (Maryview Medical Center) who helped to coordinate the project along with Joyce Huskey (DePaul Medical Center) and Rudy White (Mary Immaculate Hospital).

“Homeowners and landlords were thrilled to have an opportunity to help improve the look and health of their community,” according to Steve Zollos, Executive Director of Healthy Communities for Bon Secours Hampton Roads. “This project has already made a remarkable difference in this community. I can’t wait to see how it looks when the bushes fill in and bloom.”

Thanks to these organizations and a host of others, East Ocean View is on the move to being a healthier community.
